Which to choose: a covered or an open litter tray?
An open litter tray works well for kittens, senior cats or large cats that need more room to move and easy access. A covered litter tray, on the other hand, is an excellent choice for an adult cat, giving it privacy. In addition, a covered tray with a replaceable activated carbon filter is much better at containing unpleasant odours and stops an eager digger from flinging litter over the edge.
Why do you need a mat in front of the litter tray?
A litter mat is one of the most practical helpers for keeping your home clean. Mats with a special texture (for example a honeycomb pattern or a rougher surface) catch the litter granules stuck to your cat's paws as soon as it steps out of the tray. This stops cat litter being spread around your home and makes everyday cleaning many times easier – you can simply shake the litter collected in the mat back into the tray or into the bin.
How do you keep the area around the litter tray fresh and odour-free?
The basis of it all is, of course, removing clumps every day with a good litter scoop. If you use a covered tray, regularly replace the activated carbon filter in its lid, which traps odours. For fresh air, we also recommend using special litter tray deodorisers, which neutralise the smell of urine right at the source, leaving the room smelling clean.
